Need help attaching gate to house?

I am trying to attach a wooden gate to my garage. I can’t bury a post because there is a concrete sidewalk there and don’t want to have to bust into it. I have old cedar lap siding so finding a flat wall is also an issue. There is a stud behind the lap siding however where I want to put the gate.
The hinge side will be attached to the garage, with the gate spanning a sidewlk and latching onto a post in the ground. The fence will continue another 4 feet to the house.

Bruce offers some good clues. I’ll just add my two cents. One question I have is…Is the STUD accessable? If not, make it so and patch after. Add a double stud and support both with plates into the stud where it attaches at the footer and header. Add additional horizontal supports as well if able. Is this at the leading corner of the house?

Then; as was suggested use shims and your support post. 2 x 4; etc. I’d not use LAGS. I’d use Long enough bolts to go all the way through all the support structure/ fender washers/ and nuts. 3/8 galvanized at an appropriate length should suffice.

Another question I have however, which might be as valid, is What is opposite the hinge area of the gate at the house wall? Assuming you’re HANGING off the house wall. Fence? Block wall? A large tree? Just curious. Depending on that answer; I might advice completely differently.
